Carolina Connection Testimonial: Halfway through my freshman year, I decided to see what UNC’s student radio newscast, Carolina Connection, was all about. I went to one of the story meetings, pitched an idea, and the show’s adviser, Adam Hochberg, and its senior leaders told me to go for it. Over the next week and a half, Adam and the veterans taught me how to turn that idea into a story. I still remember how excited and surprised I was when that story – my first one – actually aired. I thought, “Is it really this easy to get started in journalism?”
At UNC, it really is. If you work hard and learn from your great J-school professors and talented peers, you’ll be ready for a job before you graduate. By the time I got my diploma, I had already done a story that aired on NPR stations across the country and lined up a job reporting for Charlotte’s NPR station. All that started with a casual decision to check out a Carolina Connection story meeting. Looking back, I think it was the best decision I made in college.
