Carolina Week Testimonial: After completing my master’s at UNC in May ’07, I was hungry for work all summer, with almost nothing happpening. So, I built a portfolio site to showcase my work from Carolina Week, my summer internship at UNC-TV, and work I did through VisCom projects. Then, the flood gates opened once I “hung out my shingle” as an independent producer and since then I’ve been busier than I could’ve imagined. One of the steady streams of work I’ve had is through Duke’s Office of News and Communications, less than five minutes from my house, shooting and producing stories for the web. This kind of hybrid journalism is a blend of the sorts of quick stories I did with Carolina Week, and some of the longer profile-type stories for the web through VisCom projects. Being able to take the best from several areas of the J-school, where I had abundant one-on-one instruction, has definitely allowed me to craft and create a style that fits the new-media demands I was hoping to target — and to grow a small “agency” business doing work that helps foster good in the world. I have crossed paths with more CW and J-school alumni in professional capacities than I would’ve guessed and it’s always great seeing where our paths have led us.
