Israeli
Elections
by Suzanne Presto
Ariel Sharon will continue to serve as Israel's
Prime Minister. Israelis re-elected SharonTuesday
in a general election, Israel's fourth national
election in seven years.
Israelis sang and danced at Sharon's Likud
Party headquarters to celebrate his landslide
victory.
Closer to home, University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill students and others on campuses
across North America and Canada, staged
a mock vote to coincide with Tuesday's elections.
Students collected signatures, passed out
flyers and voted on laptops outside Student
Stores.
UNC-CH sophomore Dave Krusch spearheaded
Carolina's participation.
"We've
had a pretty good turnout. People are interested
and it's an important issue," he said. "It's
important to us and it should be important
to a lot of people who care about democracy."
The results of the mock election are posted
at www.israelvotes2003.com.
