Minority Swimming
By Jerri Simmons

Most recent statistics show that nearly 650 children drowned in 2002 and more than 40% of those children were minorities. Minorities make up only about a quarter of the population.

Experts say too many minority kids aren't learning how to swim. If your child doesn't know how to swim, the Chapel Hill YMCA swimming program might be the right place to start. The Y offers various swimming programs for children and adults.

Swimming is an important skill, and experts say the earlier children learn how to swim the better.
